  • 106 th Congress, H. Con. Resolution 266, June 14, 2000; www.amc-music. org/pubpol.html; Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring) that it is the sense of the Congress that -

  • Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and "Classics in the Classroom":
"Even as music education programs have been disappearing from early elementary school curricula, their value has become increasingly obvious. Not only do such programs provide cultural, aesthetic and technical knowledge of the music itself, but they are also thought to contribute importantly to development by improving intellectual, motor, and social abilities and skills outside the realm of music, and by contributing to students' success in their "regular" courses of study. Recent research indicates that musical training, even just listening to music, stimulates improvement in the "spatial reasoning skills" crucial to such functions as complex mathematics and science. Other recent studies indicate that very basic musical training, involving listening and recognizing musical ideas, enhances children's reading abilities.
  • “The idea that sports helps build character through hard work, discipline and teamwork, is one of the cultural basics for most Americans. The idea that the same thing can be achieved from playing classical music in an orchestra." “Orchestra is a community whose essence is in collaboration. It requires teamwork, rigor and disciplines, all of these elements, besides influencing the music, influence a person’s development.” “Music is a way for children to express themselves, a fundamental way to communicate and therefore it has an immense social value.” “I never thought they would trust me with an instrument... The music has taught me how to treat people without violence.“…Lennar, 17 years old. The Orchestra - CBS 60 Minutes, 11/19/00. Ed Bradley reports and Harry Radliffe is the producer.
