Each summer at the OPUS camp, students have the opportunity to learn about some

Two workshops are planned for the 2010 OPUS Camp:
AN INTRODUCTION TO ARABIC MUSIC
Arabic music is full of the beautiful use of bowed string instruments. In this workshop
led by versatile musician Cathy Kuna, small groups of students will have an interactive
introduction to the basic elements of Arabic music, including rhythm patterns, scales,
style, and improvisation.
CHAMBER MUSIC FROM A COMPOSER’S PERSPECTIVE
OPUS is delighted to have composer Sebastian Huydts join us for a special workshop
in 2010.
A native of The Netherlands, he has lived primarily in Chicago for the
past 17 years. As a composer, Huydts has received commissions from the DuPage Symphony
Orchestra, the Chicago Chamber Musicians, Rembrandt Chamber Players, as well as
the Orion Ensemble and many individuals. As a pianist, he performs regularly with
CUBE in Chicago, as well as with members of the Orquestra Simfonica de Barcelona
i National de Catalunya. He is interested in all styles of music, especially those
works written in the last 100 years. He is also an educator, currently teaching
at Columbia College in Chicago. Sebastian is eager to encourage OPUS students to
try their hands at composition, and to talk about all things compositional.
